I had the pleasure to attend the state marker ceremony this morning for Amanda America Dickson Toomer. Amanda inherited 17,000 acres in Hancock and Washington counties from her slavemaster making her one of the richest women in the 19th century even though she was black. Her house is on Telfair street. I met some of her direct descendants; some were local, some from Sparta, Ohio, and Florida.
