Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History Appoints New Interim Director

The Board of Directors for The Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History has appointed Ms. Linda F. Johnson as the Interim Director of the Museum, effective upon the retirement of the Museum’s current Executive Director, Ms. Christine Miller-Betts, on June 1, 2020.

Ms. Johnson served as President of the Lucy Craft Laney Museum for 4 years, and prior to that, served on the Board since 2014. She retired from the State of Georgia after working for 30 years in management. Ms. Johnson will serve as Interim Director.

Ms. Christine Miller-Betts was the first Executive Director of the Museum and guided it from a tiny house museum in the historic Laney Walker District, to a significant Black History destination in the South. She served as Executive Director since its opening in 1991, implementing countless community programs, art and history exhibitions, as well as educational projects. A well known and respected pillar of the Augusta Community, Ms. Betts has made a lasting impact on Augusta and created national awareness of the tremendous legacy of Lucy Craft Laney. A retirement celebration has been postponed until COVID-19 safe-distancing requirements are no longer necessary.
